My Experience
My work in the field of eating disorders began during my graduate internship recognizing the prevalence of eating disorders and body image struggles among student athletes. This experience fueled me to address those concerns directly, and I have since been working with individuals with co-occurring eating disorders, substance use, and trauma. I have extensive experience providing individual, group therapy, and psychoeducation to families and affected others across levels of care including Residential, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP), and outpatient settings. My continued commitment to this work stems from a desire to deepen my understanding of the complex ways people relate to their bodies, and to help create a space where they feel seen, heard, and validated—especially within systems that so often overlook nuance and lived experience.
From day one, I knew Chelsea was someone I could trust. She has a no-nonsense approach that was exactly what I needed. Chelsea never let me off the hook, and for that I am truly grateful. But more than that, she listened, validated, and reassured me when I needed it most, she helped me find my confidence when I wasn’t sure it even existed.
Meet Chelsea Stephenson, Therapist at New Roots
I’m a Licensed Clinical Professional Counselor (LCPC) passionate about treating eating disorders and co-occurring diagnoses within interdisciplinary care teams. My relational, trauma-informed approach is rooted in the principles of Health at Every Size (HAES) and an anti-diet framework. I encourage clients to explore their relationships to food and movement while reconnecting with their bodies to cultivate self-compassion and reclaim a sense of identity beyond the eating disorder. In a culture that often disconnects us from ourselves, I believe that coming home to the body is a radical act of healing.
What I Do
I specialize in supporting individuals through the challenges of eating disorders with a therapeutic relationship grounded in safety, trust, collaboration, compassion, and respect for autonomy. I take an integrative approach that blends evidence-based methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) with somatic, arts-based, and embodiment practices that support nervous system regulation and reconnection with the mind & body. I also practice CPT, a structured, trauma-focused therapy that helps individuals challenge and reframe unhelpful beliefs (that can often underlie ED behaviors), reducing their emotional power and fostering more attuned, liberated ways of thinking and coping.
I believe therapy isn’t about fixing what’s broken; rather, tapping into your own endless healing capacity by coming back to yourself—your voice, needs, inherent worth. I view myself as a fellow traveler, walking alongside individuals as they rebuild body trust and relearn to listen to the body’s innate wisdom–not the eating disorder’s demands–and explore how this shift impacts all areas of life. I honor the diverse identities, cultural backgrounds, and lived experiences of each client, recognizing that embodiment looks different for every body. I am committed to creating a safe, affirming space where clients can reduce avoidance and rediscover what it means to unapologetically inhabit a body with kindness and choice.
